How to Prepare Soil for Sod
Proper preparation of your yard is essential for a successful, easy-to-maintain lawn. You’ll want a loose base of 2 to 3 inches of topsoil below your sod, a brown and organic blend is best. Organic soil provides nutrients to keep the soil from becoming too hard, which is good for root development. Brown, or heavier soil, will prevent excessive settling.
Remove all old grass and vegetation before loosening the existing topsoil. Often you may need to add a bit of new topsoil to fill in any low or uneven spots in your yard. Once loosened and in place, rake the soil out evenly to ensure proper pitch for drainage. Topsoil should be level and free from clumps that create air pockets under the sod.
How to Care for Sod after Delivery
The time of year and outdoor temperature will have an impact on when you lay your new lawn. Sod is a living, perishable plant and should be installed immediately after delivery for best results. In early spring and late fall, when temperatures are below 70 degrees, it is safe to wait up to 24 hours for installation. On hot summer days, lay the sod the same day you receive it.
How to Install Sod
Schedule delivery of your new sod to arrive after topsoil and grading preparation. Attempting to do preparation and sod laying in one day, especially for big areas, runs the risk of leaving the sod sitting on the pallet too long.
Sod rolls should be laid with the joints tightly butted against each other in a brick-like pattern, staggering each shorter side. Start along a straight edge to keep the rows running as straight as possible. This prevents unnecessary piecing-in of small areas. Around curved areas, overlap each new roll of sod around and trim the excess. Avoid using small pieces of sod (less than 8 inches) to fill areas as they are harder to keep watered and may dry out.
For slopes or hills, lay the sod rolls so that the long edge is perpendicular to the direction of the slope. Depending on the slope’s steepness, you may need to anchor the sod down using a wooden dowel or a “sod staple.”
Watering and Fertilizing Your Sod
Complete a sod section and begin watering immediately upon installation while laying sod in other sections. This takes about 45-60 minutes. Letting new sod get too dry will cause unnecessary stress on your lawn. Water every day for the first 10 days. After, the temperature and rainfall will affect how often you water per week. It’s recommended to water every other day for the first 30 days.
Fertilize your sod 30 days after installation. Continue to fertilize 3 to 4 times per year. Mow your lawn once root development is sufficient (approximately 12 days after installation). Mower settings should be at the highest level for the first cut but lower each time until you reach your desired length.
